River Lis
The River Lis is a Portuguese river that rises near the village of Fontes, two and a half kilometers south of the parish of Cortes, to which it belongs, in the district and municipality of the city of Leiria.
During the Middle Ages, it was one of the most important means of development for the region, having a shipping pier and 17 vessels that were built in the shipyards with wood from the pine forest of Leiria, still in the 19th century. We can find some traces of a shipyard located in the north of Praia da Vieira. The river Lis and the river Lena, a tributary of the left bank north of the river Lis, inspired poets and prose writers, giving rise to the legend of a love between the Lis and its tributary Lena, which gave rise to the name of Leiria.
Legend has it that the river Lis and its tributary river Lena fell in love and that, one day, on the way out of town, where the two met, they celebrated the wedding to unite their love in a single river. There is also a fishing lane in Vale do Lis, accessible to sport fishermen.
Thank you for your visit. You are always wellcome to our region.
